Consular wine "Swiss Guard" Cuvée d' Honneur 1506 750ml

A bottle with history, but without museum dust: This consular wine was created for the 6th of May, the great day of the Papal Swiss Guard. In Rome, the guards remember the Sacco di Roma of 1527, new recruits take their flag oath – and from the Valais comes a wine that does not make a loud entrance, but is clear, fresh and dignified.

On the nose, it shows lemon zest, pear, yellow apple, white flowers and a fine almond note. The minerality is clearly in the foreground: cool stone, bright gravel, a salty note and this taut freshness that immediately brings tension to the glass.

On the palate, the cuvée is dry, precise and lively. Heida brings spice, alpine tension and a mineral backbone; Chardonnay adds fruit, balance and length. The wine appears bright, clear and firmly guided, with citrus freshness, a fine almond note and a salty-mineral aftertaste.

This wine is at its best when it is not just poured, but told: A young guardsman recounts the oath of allegiance in the Damasus courtyard, a wine knight recognises the Valais origin in the glass, at the table sit family, friends or guests who may wear neither uniform nor order cloak – but immediately understand that this bottle can do more than just accompany.

Culinarily, it plays exactly where Switzerland and Rome shake hands: with veal with sage and lemon, zucchini flowers, artichokes, fine alpine cheese, fried fish with herbs or an elegant plate with light meat, vegetables and salty freshness.

Serving tip: serve at 10–12 °C in a good white wine glass. This way, the minerality, fruit, almond note and the clear structure are best displayed.

A wine for people who not only toast each other but share something together: origin, friendship, history and the joy of a glass with meaning – IN HONOREM DEI ET IN HONOREM VINI.
