Cornalin le Grand 750ml
The Cornalin Le Grand 2022 is Wallis in its darkest, wildest and proudest form. A great indigenous red wine from the historic variety Rouge du Pays – profound, powerful, spicy and made for moments when a wine not only accompanies but takes over the space.
In the glass, it shows a dense ruby red with a dark core. The nose is intense and complex: black cherries, ripe plums, dark berries and a hint of cranberry meet violets, black pepper, clove, dried herbs and a cool, stony minerality. Fine notes of cocoa, smoke, noble wood and dark spice resonate – like a fire that slowly builds embers.
On the palate, the wine is dry, full-bodied and powerful. The fruit appears dark and ripe, the acidity brings tension, and the tannins provide structure. With 14.9% vol., this Cornalin has considerable presence, yet it is not clumsy, instead showing depth, warmth, and an alpine character. In the long finish, black cherry, pepper, cocoa, stone, and a slightly wild spice linger.
This is a wine for extraordinary moments: with lamb, game, entrecôte, braised beef, dark sauces, hearty mushroom dishes, or a piece of aged mountain cheese. And yes – also for a sip by the fireside, when the world outside is allowed a brief pause.
Serving suggestion: enjoy at around 14 °C. Use large glasses and give the wine some air – this Cornalin does not want to be rushed.
One sip of this, and the Valais is no longer on the map. It stands in the middle of the room.
